The term amplifier refers to any device that increases the amplitude of a signal, usually measured in voltage or current. This versatile device is used in a variety of different electronic applications. Especially in audio technology, a wide range of amplifiers can be produced based on product specifications (i.e. power, voltage, current). Currently, there are many types of audio amplifiers available for consumers. Sound signal amplification is used for instruments, such as the guitar or the bass. They are also used commonly in home theater systems and with stereo speakers. The basic design behind all of these amplifiers is derived from the simplest concepts of circuit design.

Classes of Amplifiers:

Assembled in different configurations, resistors, capacitors, and transistors can create several classes of amplifiers that can be distinguished by performance characteristics. Class A amps are very linear (meaning the integrity of the signal is maintained through the amplification process); however, this amplifier topology is known to be very inefficient. In addition, Class A amplifiers invert the signal (meaning the function is reflected over its axis). Class B amps are much less linear, leading to higher distortion of the signal, but they are much more efficient. Since a Class B amp only amplifies half of a signal, two Class B amps are generally used in synchronization. The compromise between these two topologies is the Class AB amplifier. The Class AB is more efficient than the Class A with lower distortion than the Class B. Often the different types of amplifiers are used in combination with other amplifiers into order to achieve the specifications of a particular design.

Making electrical repairs in your home can save you hundreds of dollars in service costs. One tool you’ll need to get started is a voltage tester. If you have a voltage tester, you can test outlets and light switches to see if voltage is present in their circuits. The most basic type of voltage tester consists of a small, pen-like device with a red lead and black lead extending from it.

What is a Voltage Meter?

    • A voltage meter is a device that is used to measure the strength of an electrical current flowing within an electrical circuit. Essentially what it does is measure the electrical potential (the strength of an electrical charge) at two specific points within the circuit. It then compares these potentials and presents the difference between the two. This difference is the rate at which current florws through the circuit. Voltage meters can be analog devices which use an arrow to indicate the electrical potential, while digital ones provide a read-out.


    • At the center of the voltage meter is a magnet connected at both ends to pieces of magnetized iron. Sitting between the ends of the magnet is a cylinder made of iron. Because of its placement, the cylinder sits within both the positive and negative fields put out by the magnet. A coil of copper wire is wrapped around the far end of the cylinder, all of which is fitted into a housing. At the far end of the wire is a needle, steadied on either side by a spring. Behind the needle is the dial representing voltage. Fitted on the outside of the housing are two more wires, each of which connects to either end of the magnet.

    How Does a Voltage Meter Work?

    • When the voltage meter is at rest, the needle points to the left side of the meter, representing zero electrical potential. The wire leads are attached to two parts of a live circuit. This causes the electricity to polarize the magnet within the meter even further. Should the difference of the potential between the two wires be a positive number, which it would be if any electricity were flowing through the circuit at all, the magnetic field within the meter becomes positively imbalanced, causing the needle to pull from the left side of the meter to the right, indicating how strong the electrical potential is.

Today’s EIO post is on digital photo frames. A digital photo frame (also called a digital media frame) is a picture frame that displays digital photos without the need to print them or use a computer.


Digital photo frames’ common sizes range from 7 inch (17.8 cm) to 20 inch (50.8 cm), keychain-sized. Some digital photo frames can only display JPEG pictures. Most digital photo frames display the photos as a slideshow and usually with an adjustable time interval. They may also be able to send photos to a printer.

Digital photo frames typically display the pictures directly from a camera’s memory card, though certain frames also provide internal memory storage. Some allow users to upload pictures to the frame’s memory via a USB connection, or wirelessly via  Bluetooth technology. Some frames allow photos to be shared from a frame to another.

Certain frames can load pictures over the Internet from RSS feeds, photo sharing sites such as Flickr, Picasa and from e-mail. Such networked models usually support wireless (802.11) connections. Moreover, some digital frames now use cellular technology to transfer and share files easily and faster.

Most 7 inch (17.8 cm) models show images at 430 x 234 or 480 x 234 pixels. With some models the width of each landscape image is stretched to achieve an aspect ratio of 16:9, which results in noticeable distortion. Built-in speakers are common for playing video content with sound, and many frames also feature remote controls.

External Power Supplies 101


External power supplies are devices that convert ac power from a wall outlet into lower voltage dc or ac power to be used directly by electronic circuits. External power supplies come in a separate physical enclosure than the end-use product, and usually provide power to the device directly through a separate cord and plug. External power supplies are used to power a variety of electronic devices, including: laptop computers, printers, cordless phones, cell phones, etc.


External power supplies are used both with equipment with no other source of power, and with battery-powered equipment, where the supply both charges the battery and powers the equipment when plugged in. One of the benefits of using an external, rather than internal power supply is it increases the portability of a device, by avoiding the need of internal power components. Use of an external power supply allows portability of battery-powered equipment without the added bulk of internal power components and makes it unnecessary to produce equipment for use only with a specified power source.


Benefits of Using an External Power Supply

Safety — External power adapters can free product designers from worrying about some safety issues. Much of this style of equipment uses only voltages low enough not to be a safety hazard internally, although the power supply must out of necessity use dangerous mains voltage. If an external power supply is used (usually via a power connector, often of coaxial type), the equipment need not be designed with concern for hazardous voltages inside the enclosure. This is particularly relevant for equipment with lightweight cases which may break and expose internal electrical parts.

Heat reduction — Heat reduces reliability and longevity of electronic components, and can cause sensitive circuits to become inaccurate or malfunction. A separate power supply removes a source of heat from the apparatus.

Electrical noise reduction — Because radiated electrical noise falls off with the square of the distance, it is to the manufacturer’s advantage to convert potentially noisy AC line power or automotive power to “clean”, filtered DC in an external adapter, at a safe distance from noise-sensitive circuitry.

Weight and size reduction — When most power adapters featured simple mains-frequency transformer-based designs, they were quite heavy and large, and added considerably to the weight and bulk of devices designed to be lightweight. Even modern power supplies are relatively heavy compared to other circuitry. Removing power components from equipment powered by rechargeable batteries reduces the weight and size which must be carried, though use of other rechargeable batteries like sealed lead-acid batteries can questionably put more weight on the equipment.

Ease of replacement — Power supplies are more prone to failure than other circuitry due to their exposure to power spikes and their internal generation of waste heat. External power supplies can be replaced quickly by a user without the need to have the powered device repaired.

Configuration versatility — Externally powered electronic products can be used with different power sources as needed (e.g. 120VAC, 240VAC, 12VDC, or external battery pack), for convenient use in the field, or when traveling.

Today’s EIO post is an introduction to computer cases and their uses.


What Is A Computer Case?




A computer case (also known as a “computer chassis”, “cabinet”, “box”, “enclosure”, “housing”, or simply “case”) is the enclosure that contains most of the components of a computer (usually excluding the display, keyboard and mouse).  Cases are usually constructed from steel (often SECC — Steel, electrogalvanized, cold-rolled, coil) or aluminium. Plastic is sometimes used, and other materials such as wood and even Lego blocks have appeared in home-built cases.




Computer cases usually include sheet metal enclosures for a power supply unit and drive bays, as well as a rear panel that can accommodate peripheral connectors protruding from the motherboard and expansion slots. Most cases also have a power button or switch, a reset button, and LEDs to indicate power status as well as hard drive and network activity. Some cases include built-in I/O ports (such as USB and headphone ports) on the front of the case. Such a case will also include the wires needed to connect these ports, switches and indicators to the motherboard.


Hardware Access


Tower cases have either a single side panel which may be removed in order to access the internal components or a large cover that saddles the chassis. Traditionally, most computer cases required computer case screws to hold components and panels in place (i.e. motherboard, PSU, drives, and expansion cards). Recently  there is a trend toward “screwless” cases, in which components are held together with snap-in plastic rails, thumbscrews, and other methods that do not require tools; this facilitates quick assembly and modification of computer hardware.
