Speaker wire is also commonly known as zip cord. Its main use is to create an electrical connection between loudspeakers and audio amplifiers. Most speaker wires consist of two or more electrical conductors that although are electrically identical, are marked to identify the correct audio signal polarity.

When selecting which type of speaker wire is right for your electronic needs, Wikipedia gives this advice:

“Speaker wires are selected based on price, quality of construction, aesthetic purpose, and convenience. Stranded wire is more flexible than solid wire, and is suitable for movable equipment. For a wire that will be exposed rather than run within walls, under floor coverings, or behind moldings (such as in a home), appearance may be a benefit, but it is irrelevant to electrical characteristics. Better jacketing may be thicker or tougher, less chemically reactive with the conductor, less likely to tangle and easier to pull through a group of other wires, or may incorporate a number of shielding techniques for non-domestic uses.”

Heat shrink tubing is a specially made type of plastic tubing whose diameter shrinks when heated. It is most commonly used in electrical applications in order to extend the life of cables, wires, or other electrical connections by protecting, insulating, or repairing them. In particular, it is used to repair the insulation on wires or to bundle them together. This protects the wires from cuts or abrasions.

Types of Material Used for the Tubing

The material used in heat shrink is often made of nylon or polyolefin. The exact composition of each type of tubing depends on what it is used for and the intended application, so the varieties and chemical makeups vary. In terms of rigidity and density, these also vary depending on the application. There are variations of near microscopically thin wall tubing, to rigid and heavy-wall tubing.

How Do You Shrink the Tubing?

Depending on the exact type of material used, there are two main ways that heat shrink tubing can work. Tubing can be specially treated during the manufacturing process to shrink when heated. This type of tubing is said to be expansion-based. When it is manufactured, it is heated to near its melting point and stretched to expand its diameter. It is then rapidly cooled in order to help it keep its shape. When heated later in consumer use, the tubing will shrink back down to the size it was before it was stretched in the first place.

Firewire 1394 interface, officially known as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1394, allows users to transfer large amounts of data between electronic devices. It is comparable with USB, and is able to transfer up to 400 megabits per second.

Cable Length Standard

The cable length is 15 feet long, and its length cannot exceed 15 feet because that is its standard. To increase the length, users can connect a cable to another.

Comparisons with USB

Firewire 1394 has been compared to the USB, and they are comparable, but there are still some fundamental differences. According to Wikipedia, USB requires the presence of a bus master, typically a PC, which connects point to point with the USB slave. This allows for simpler (and lower-cost) peripherals, at the cost of lowered functionality of the bus. Intelligent hubs are required to connect multiple USB devices to a single USB bus master. By contrast, FireWire is essentially a peer-to-peer network (where any device may serve as the host or client), allowing multiple devices to be connected on one bus.

Telephone cables can also be called telephone plugs. The most common standard is known as the RJ11 male connector, or modular connector, in most countries today.
