Making electrical repairs in your home can save you hundreds of dollars in service costs. One tool you’ll need to get started is a voltage tester. If you have a voltage tester, you can test outlets and light switches to see if voltage is present in their circuits. The most basic type of voltage tester consists of a small, pen-like device with a red lead and black lead extending from it.

What is a Voltage Meter?

    • A voltage meter is a device that is used to measure the strength of an electrical current flowing within an electrical circuit. Essentially what it does is measure the electrical potential (the strength of an electrical charge) at two specific points within the circuit. It then compares these potentials and presents the difference between the two. This difference is the rate at which current florws through the circuit. Voltage meters can be analog devices which use an arrow to indicate the electrical potential, while digital ones provide a read-out.


    • At the center of the voltage meter is a magnet connected at both ends to pieces of magnetized iron. Sitting between the ends of the magnet is a cylinder made of iron. Because of its placement, the cylinder sits within both the positive and negative fields put out by the magnet. A coil of copper wire is wrapped around the far end of the cylinder, all of which is fitted into a housing. At the far end of the wire is a needle, steadied on either side by a spring. Behind the needle is the dial representing voltage. Fitted on the outside of the housing are two more wires, each of which connects to either end of the magnet.

    How Does a Voltage Meter Work?

    • When the voltage meter is at rest, the needle points to the left side of the meter, representing zero electrical potential. The wire leads are attached to two parts of a live circuit. This causes the electricity to polarize the magnet within the meter even further. Should the difference of the potential between the two wires be a positive number, which it would be if any electricity were flowing through the circuit at all, the magnetic field within the meter becomes positively imbalanced, causing the needle to pull from the left side of the meter to the right, indicating how strong the electrical potential is.

Computer Cases 101

Today’s EIO post is an introduction to computer cases and their uses.


What Is A Computer Case?




A computer case (also known as a “computer chassis”, “cabinet”, “box”, “enclosure”, “housing”, or simply “case”) is the enclosure that contains most of the components of a computer (usually excluding the display, keyboard and mouse).  Cases are usually constructed from steel (often SECC — Steel, electrogalvanized, cold-rolled, coil) or aluminium. Plastic is sometimes used, and other materials such as wood and even Lego blocks have appeared in home-built cases.




Computer cases usually include sheet metal enclosures for a power supply unit and drive bays, as well as a rear panel that can accommodate peripheral connectors protruding from the motherboard and expansion slots. Most cases also have a power button or switch, a reset button, and LEDs to indicate power status as well as hard drive and network activity. Some cases include built-in I/O ports (such as USB and headphone ports) on the front of the case. Such a case will also include the wires needed to connect these ports, switches and indicators to the motherboard.


Hardware Access


Tower cases have either a single side panel which may be removed in order to access the internal components or a large cover that saddles the chassis. Traditionally, most computer cases required computer case screws to hold components and panels in place (i.e. motherboard, PSU, drives, and expansion cards). Recently  there is a trend toward “screwless” cases, in which components are held together with snap-in plastic rails, thumbscrews, and other methods that do not require tools; this facilitates quick assembly and modification of computer hardware.

Is a Laptop Cooler Really Important?

Factors That Cause Excessive Heat That May Harm Your Laptop

Surrounding Temperatures:

Laptops are usually designed to withstand temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius maximum.  If, for example, you live in an area that regularly exceeds this maximum temperature, the likelihood of your device experiencing problems would be quite high.  Heat often builds up and takes some time to disperse from the inner casing of a laptop.  So if your equipment was permanently in a location with high temperatures, it would be a good idea to have something to cool it off before serious damage is done to the product.

Benefits of Magnifiers

Magnifiers are great because they help to enhance vision. They enable people to undertake detailed work or compensate for a sight disability that lowers an individual’s vision. Magnifiers are valuable when one most focus on fine detail. In hobbies such as model-making, stamp collecting and cross-stitch, an individual will often use a magnifier so they can see intricate detail.

Magnifiers have specially designed lenses that bend light. This increases the size of text or a smaller object, making it better to see. To get the best focus on the task in hand, hold the magnifier close to the your eye. Then bring the work up towards it till optimal focus is achieved.

When carrying out intricate tasks with a magnifier, one should work in the natural light as much as possible to avoid straining the eyes. Where it is not possible to work with natural light, or where natural light isn’t adequate, utilize an adjustable light fixture. This allows light to shine directly on to the area being magnified.

Different magnifiers should be used for different tasks. Larger lenses tend to be less powerful than smallish lenses. Large lenses are useful when an individual wants all-round, low-level magnification. Large lenses work effectively for tasks like reading or completing a crossword. Where precision work is needed, a small powerful lens may very well be more appropriate. A good example of a smaller, powerful magnifier would be jeweler’s magnifier.

Handheld magnifiers are easy to use and cheap to buy. Some handheld magnifiers have built-in illumination, making it easier to see when the lighting is poor. These magnifiers are well suited for reading small print while active because they are light to transport. The disadvantage of some handheld magnifiers is that they leave the individual with merely one hand available to carry out tasks. This is fine if the individual is only holding a book, newspaper, and also magazine, but this may be restrictive.

Hands-free magnifiers are probably a better option for anyone with a hobby that demands the use of their hands, such like sewing, knitting, or model-making. Hands-free magnifiers hang around the individual’s neck. This is great for other assignments too, as they have large lenses. 7-Segment LED Displays

Seven segment LED displays are the most basic representational format used to create an electronic image or representation.  They are composed of seven congruent parts, which can be manipulated to create the Arabic numerals (0-9) as well as the six letter digits (A-F).  The most common uses for seven segment displays are for posters, electronic telephone number displays, and pricing displays. Seven segment displays are no longer used as frequently as they were in the past, due to the fact that dot-matrix displays are now the common display method utilized to take full advantage of LED capabilities.

Dot matrix displays are now the most common form used to create images and representations with LED’s.  Dot matrices consist of a 2-D matrix of LED’s.  Through the flow of electricity, it is possible to control each LED individually, which allows for the creation of different objects and symbols.
