An Introduction to USB

Today’s Eio post focuses on USB interface products.

What is the USB?

USB 2.0: The Standard

USB, or universal serial bus, is a type of serial interface that allows one to transfer data by attaching external devices to a computer. Most USB products, such as digital cameras, mice, or external hard drives are “plug-and-play,” meaning you don’t have to install anything to use the product. Instead, one just plugs the external device into the USB port and the computer will automatically detect it. In these ways, USB technology greatly simplifies the installation of hardware on a computer, allowing devices to be attached/detached while the computer is in operation.

USB 2.0 is currently the standard and universal USB interface to transfer data between computer to device. It surpassed its 1.1 predecessor, but is currently being challenged by the USB 3.0 technology.

USB 3.0: The Next Generation

USB 3.0 is expected to take data transfer speeds to the next level. USB 3.0’s transfer rate is rougly 4.8 gigabits per second. Wisegeek estimates for 25 gigabytes to be transferred, USB 2.0 would take 14 minutes while USB 3.0 would take about 70 seconds.

USB 3.0 costs more than the 2.0 version, so only buy the former if your aim is to transfer data quicker and smoother. If you will use the 3.0 to connect an external device that does not have the specific task of transferring lots of data (e.g. printer, keyboard, mouse), the 3.0’s speed won’t be noticeable. But for hard drives, cameras, or other storage devices, USB 3.0 is the right choice for you.

As a final note, the plug connector for USB 2.0 and 3.0 look exactly the same. However, USB 3.0 will only work with 3.0 compatible connectors. 2.0 also works with 3.0 compatible connectors, while 3.0 does not work with 2.0 compatible connectors.

Popular USB Products from Bytecc

Bytecc is a company that specializes in USB interface products. Eio highlights some of their more popular products!

BYTECC USB3-ESATA SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to eSATA 3Gbs Adapter

The USB3-ESATA is an adapter cable for USB 3.0 to eSATA connectors. It has a two-inch length in between plugs which give slightly more reach. The transfer speed also triples in speed, making the transfer rate three times as fast than when using USB 2.0.

BYTECC BT-144 Black 1.44/0.72/1.25 MB 3.5″ External USB Floppy Drive

The BT-144 is an external device that allows one to transfer the data off of 3.5″ floppy discs onto the computer. Many computers no longer have floppy disc drives, which make the BT-144 highly useful. It has an ultra slim design and does not require any external power to function. It is plug & play, and easy to carry around. It is Mac OS 8.6/9.0/9.0.2/9.0.4/9.1 and Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP compatible.

BYTECC BT-300 USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter

The BT-300 is a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA adapter. It can connect to any device with an IDE/SATA interface to a PC with USB interface. The data transfer rate is approximately 490 MB/ps and comes with an external power adapter for IDE/ATAPI/SATA devices. It is also Linux and Mac compatible.

Eio carries many types of USB interface products.

It’s Monday, and that means we get to talk about new products. There’s some cool stuff for this week, so check out the products below.LiPO Rider Pro

First up is the New Seeedstudio LiPo Rider Pro. It offers a new way to power your project with battery charge management. The LiPo Rider Pro is affordable and extremely easy to use. No programming is required; simply plug it in and it works. The internal IC charger handles all the power flow between various components. The Pro edition now gives a you higher load output to 5 Volts over the Original LiPo Rider.

Thumb Joystick

You can probably find a million cool uses for this new product a Thumb Joystick, very similar to the one found in Sony PlayStation2 controllers. Directional movements are simply two potentiometers – one for each axis. Pots are ~10k each. This joystick also has a select button that is actuated when the joystick is pressed down.

Biometric sensors

We now carry three new Biometric Sensors. MQ-3 for Alcohol (CH), MQ-7 for carbon monoxide (CO), and MQ-6 for propane and butane gas sensing.

If soldering tight pitch iPod connectors is too difficult, this breakout board will help! PodBreakout brings all 30 pins of the iPod connector out to nice 0.1″ spaced holes.

Koutech IO-PEU235 USB 3.0 PCI Express Card

The Koutech IO- PEU235 uses one PCI Express slot to provide two USB 3.0 ports via ICC (a 20-pin connector by Intel USB 3.0 Internal Connector & Cable specification). With up to 5Gbps maximum transfer rate, the IO- PEU235 offers an ideal connection for printers, external CD/DVD/Blu-ray writers, hard disk drives, flash memory drives etc. A low-profile bracket is included for installing in Mini ATX cases or cases with size limitations.
