eiodotcom —  June 20, 2012 — 4 Comments

Today’s Eio post is on our wide array of Do-It-Yourself Project Kits.

If you have an itch to build or design something electronic, look no further than Velleman, based out of Fort Worth, Texas. They have several kits that are not pre-assembled.

As a side note, the “K” (e.g., K2601) or “MK” (e.g., MK171) series are kits, meaning you must assemble them yourself.

The “VM” series are the pre-assembled versions of the K or MK products.

Velleman FM Radio Kit (MK118)

This build it yourself FM radio kit allows you to assemble your own FM radio. Learn how to build a simple FM receiver with bandwidth of 88-108 MHz. It is easy to assemble, there are no annoying coils to wind, and it comes with a pre-assembled and tested FM front end. All you have to do is set up the development circuit board, attach the FM front end, ON/OFF switch, volume control, and LED indicator on, and get listening to the airwaves!

Velleman Stroboscope Kit (K2601)

Make your own disco party with Velleman’s Stroboscope kit. It creates flashing light effects similar to disco halls, or your own snapshots and lightning light effects. Wow your family and friends when they see the amazing effects of this wonderful DIY project!

Velleman Water Alarm (MK108)

This water alarm kit is tremendously practical. Put it in a corner and it gives an alarm sound when water is detected. It also has an incorporated alarm buzzer. Find leaks in your roof, mildew or mold in your closets, or problem areas in other parts of your house!

Velleman Digital Voice Changer Kit (MK171)

This digital voice changer kit is both fun to design and hilarious to use! Make your voice, no matter how high or low, sound like a robot. Add a vibrato effect similar to how your voice sounds when in front of a fan. It also includes “pitch”-buttons to make your voice sound lower or higher. This wonderful kit comes with a built-in microphone and power amplifier with volume control. All you need to do is just add a speaker. Have a blast wowing your friends at parties, changing your voice to create new characters and personalities, make up group games, even make the occasional prank phone call!

Go forth, DIY enthusiasts, and create, build, form, design, mold, craft, establish, erect, envision, and more!!

VELLEMAN BH341USB 4xAA Battery Holder

We already carry a lot of battery holders that hold 2 AA batteries and 2 AAA batteries, but this one packs 4 AA batteries has a switch, cover and a USB port for the output. I’ve used these to power USB products or just in projects. It’s also nice to just have one laying around.

Summer is just around the corner here in the North-western hemisphere, so what better time to explore the advantages of solar panels and cells. Even if a solar product never graces your home, knowing the basics of solar energy is still fascinating.

Here is a popular product on Eio, the Velleman SOL5N Solar Charger.

Did You Know (according to Solar Energy 101):

  • Enough energy comes from the sun in one hour to power the global population for a year.
  • Sunlight is a totally renewable resource, unlike oil, coal and natural gas.
  • Solar energy is a great alternative resource due to the decrease in the world’s energy resources and the high pollution caused by many fossil fuels.

The Advantages of Using Solar Energy

Solar energy is harnessed by the photovoltaic effect created in solar cells and panels. Solar panels, a collection of tightly connected solar cells, capture sunlight and convert its energy directly into electricity. And solar panels are more common than you think: although mainly used to adorn rooftops, they also come in handheld calculators, solar powered street and traffic lights, even fans and radios.

According to the Solar Now! campaign in Oregon, the advantages of putting solar panels on your house (or business) include:

  1. Increase in your property’s value
  2. Decrease in your electricity bill
  3. Demonstrates environmental leadership in your community
  4. Lightens your personal impact on the environment

Here’s a memorable (and satirical) picture from The Simpsons, when environmental activist Ed Begley Jr. unveils his solar powered creation to the lovable family. By way of poking fun at “smug” environmentalists, Begley’s humongous solar panels generate enough electricity to make a little fan spin!

It’s Monday again, so we have more new products to talk about. Just a few new products this week, but we do have some pretty cool ones worth talking about.

4x20 Character Lcd Display Module

Character LCDs serve as simple and effective way to have your project show status messages. This new 4×20 Character LCD actually has a Red LED backlight. It’s easily controlled by an Arduino using the example code in the Arduino IDE.

National Semiconductor LM335 Temperature Sensor

We’ve been using the LM335 temperature sensor in a lot of projects here at Eio and thought it might be a good idea to stock it for our customers. It’s a reliable and simple temperature sensor that works well and is easy to read. What more could you ask for?

Digital calipers are a tool that is commonly used in design and fabrication. We constantly using them to measure hole sizes, spacing, and dimensions for the products we sell. In addition, I use them for a lot of the projects we do every week. The Velleman DCA150B  6″ digital calipers  come with a nice Large LCD display. If you don’t already have a pair, now is a good time to get one.

Here at, you can find a wide assortment of LEDs, such as our Velleman MK101 Flashing LED Sweetheart. But what are LEDs, and what are they used for?

In laymen’s terms, the light emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs 101 sums up the principle of LEDs as this: “Imagine a grain of sand that emits a very bright light, usually red, amber, green or blue, depending on the material, when an electrical current is applied.”
