The PlayStation 3, also known as the PS3, is the successor to the PlayStation 2 and rivals competing Nintendo Wii and XBox 360 video game consoles.

There are several versions of the PS3, but only one type is currently in production: the PS3 Slim. Release in 2009, this version is slimmer than its predecessor. It comes in several colors, and varies in terms of how much digital storage space you want to include. You can choose from a 150, 250, 160, or 320GB hard drive storage space on your PS3 Slim. Other features of the PS3 console include its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, its multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and its Blu-ray Disc player.

The Nintendo Wii is the 7th generation video game console of the Nintendo series. It plays Nintendo video games via discs, and detects movement in three dimensions. The Wii is meant to stimulate interactivity and movement among its users, so that they play games and get exercise simultaneously. The primary wireless controller, the Wii remote, is a handheld pointing device which makes the on-screen player mimic the movements of the person possessing the Wii remote.

Sony’s PlayStation Portable

The PSP has been around since 2003. While it is not the newest video game console, its technology does have distinguishing features. According to Wikipedia, it is the only handheld console to use an optical disc format as the primary way it stores data. Furthermore, its large viewing screen far surpasses that of other handheld video game consoles, it has a vast array of multi-media capabilities, and has connectivity with the Internet, and other PlayStation generations.

Features

Audio – the PSP has a built in microphone, mono speakers, and stereo speakers. It also includes a synthesizer, equalizer, and effector.

Screen Size – 4.3 inches by 3.8 inches

Internet – PSP has full internet browser with Wi-Fi capability. You can compete with your friends over multiplayer online games.

Backward Compatibility – the PSP can also play earlier versions of PlayStation software and games.

Battery Life – comes with a Li-Ion battery and includes a DC USB power adapter to charge the battery so you don’t have to keep buying new batteries.

Versions

There have been five versions of the PSP since 2004. The latest since 2011, the PSP-E1000 is one of the few still in production. For connectivity and storage, it has a USB 2.0 interface, UMD, headphone jack, and memory stick PRO duo. For RAM and internal storage, it comes with 64MB and has 64MB system software. For its display, it has 4.3 in (110 mm) 16:9 TFT at 480 × 272, 16.77 million colors.

The XBox 360 was released in 2005 and is a part of the 7th generation of video game consoles. As of 2012, 62 million consoles have been sold worldwide. In 2010, Microsoft released a redesigned version of the Xbox 360. It is slimmer than its 2005 predecessor, has built in Wi-Fi capability, five USB 2.0 ports, and comes with an internal hard drive for data storage. The standard Xbox 360 comes with a 4 GB hard drive.

With the updated Xbox 360 and its Wi-Fi capabilities, Xbox Live is the most popular thing. It allows players to compete online, download games and other features, and even stream Netflix or movies through it.

Video Games

The popularity and fame of video games has exploded in the past 20 years. In common parlance, video game now implies any type of electronic interactive display device. To be more specific, Wikipedia defines video games as “an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device.” Video games range from games within personal computers, video game consoles, handheld devices, or even arcade games.

The Nintendo 3DS

This is a portable handheld device made by Nintendo.The 3DS allows one to see 3D effects without using 3D glasses. It has two screens: the top screen is a touchscreen, with bottom screen similar to older versions of the Nintendo DS.

Features

Camera – the 3DS comes with three cameras: one camera on the front/inside and two rear facing cameras. The cameras can also record video with sound that can be up to 10 minutes long.

Activity Log – the 3DS has an activity log that records amount of time played for each game. It has tracks physical activity, with a built in pedometer that records how many steps you take while playing.

Backward Compatibility – the 3DS can also play Nintendo DS, DSi, or Game Boy Advance software and games.

Video Compatible – the 3DS is video playback compatible, meaning it can play many movies and 3D movies. It is even Netflix compatible!!

Internet – 3DS has full internet browser with Wi-Fi capability.

Nintendo 3DS Specifications

The 3DS controller comes with a D-pad, push-buttons, a touchscreen, and a circle pad. It has wireless connection, so when you play with your friends, you don’t need wires to link up. It comes with internal 2 GB flash memory, with 1.5 GB able to use. Battery life is 3-5 hours depending on the brightness of the screen, sound volume, Wi-Fi usage, and 3D effect usage.

The 2012 E3 Expo is less than a month away! Also known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the E3 Expo is the world’s premier trade show for computer and video games and related products. E3 says this about the event:
